How many people does a Mazda mini-van seat? If you buy it of the market in Europe it seats seven comfortably. If it’s Tanzania, it seats eighteen. Not so comfortably.

Inge and I are on our way for a relaxing weekend in Mwanza. Yes I know how that sounds, I also feel like I do little work here, with days from 7:45 till 3pm max, but I needed to sort some financial matters out, and it was Inge’s last day, so there we went. The hospital staff was going to Magu to attend a funeral and there was still some space in one of their cars. Some space was indeed quite all they had left, for I rode the whole trip sitting on only one buttocks, trying not to fly though the windshield with all the abrupt braking and shaking.

On the highway (were there is everything from cattle to pedestrians) the maximum speed is 100km/h. We were driving 140km/h only narrowly escaping crossing dogs. We did not escape the police though, and the driver was stopped and fined. 4 ½ hours, a tea break and one numb buttocks later did we arrive at Magu for the funeral. I was absolutely deaf in one ear from the blaring Lake side Music the driver was playing non stop at maximum volume. From Magu we had two options: either take the bus (cheap) or take a taxi (more expensive). Since we just missed the bus, and had the first part of the trip for free, we splurged and got a taxi that brought us directly to our Victoria Palace Hotel.

OMG, Capri Point Mwanza is an archipelago into Lake Victoria surrounded by greenery, and it’s absolutely breathtaking. Our Hotel has a pool and our room is huge. Fred Chacha, my host, knows the manager and called in advance to ask them if we could stay for residence prize. I feel like a spoiled child. We walked from our hotel to the city centre to find a bank that would except my debet card and eat ice cream. All the while we were phoning Dr. Isidor, the hot shot Orthopaedic Surgeon, because he wanted to give us a tour of his private clinic. He was running late because an acrobat on a bike had rammed his car, but luckily he had more cars at his disposal and picked us up at around 16:30.

The clinic opened it’s doors only 3 weeks ago. Everything is new and from China. It looks amazing; I have to give them that, although there is one mayor design flaw. All the orthopaedic patients are supposed to go up three flights of stairs to reach their post-OP rooms. Even Dr. Chirangi joined us for the tour and he marvelled at the new X-ray machine, from Alibaba.
